Google Expands AI Overviews on More Search Queries

As artificial intelligence becomes an increasingly central part of Google Search, the company has begun widening the presence of its AI Overviews on some queries. These AI Overviews are concise, AI-generated summaries that sit above traditional search results and draw information from multiple web sources to give a synthesized answer.

Instead of remaining a small summary at the top of the page, AI Overviews are now expanding more frequently to occupy a much larger portion of the search results page. In certain situations Google’s systems will automatically expand the Overview so that it fills most or all of the visible page area, presenting an extended AI-generated response rather than a brief snippet.

Google first rolled out AI Overviews as a way to help users get direct, summarized answers to common questions without immediately clicking through to other websites. The Overviews still cite and draw on links from across the web, and those source links are typically included within the AI-generated content so users can trace information back to its origin. The recent change makes some Overviews far more prominent and gives them a more interactive, exploratory feel.

According to Google, the expansion is dynamic and selective. For specific queries where the system judges an expanded AI Overview to be most helpful, the Overview may open up to offer a more complete response and encourage follow-up exploration. Google’s internal research indicates that when the experience dynamically expands, users find Search more useful and are likelier to dive deeper, examining the suggested follow-up topics and referenced sources.

For some queries, AI Overviews may dynamically expand for topics where our systems determine it’s most useful for people. Our research has shown that with this dynamic experience, users find Search more helpful and engage deeper in follow-up exploration.

One clear example of the expanded Overviews appears with definition queries. When someone asks for the meaning of a word or a concise explanation of a concept, the AI Overview can take over much of the screen and present a complete definition, supporting context, and links to source material. This helps users who need quick, authoritative explanations without having to scroll through multiple links.

Expanded AI Overviews also raise important considerations for publishers and content creators. When Search surfaces a large AI-generated response, some users may rely on that synthesis instead of visiting the original sources, which could affect referral traffic. At the same time, Google continues to include source attributions within Overviews, and site owners can expect that high-quality, authoritative content will still be referenced and highlighted by the system.

For searchers, the expanded Overviews can speed up information discovery, especially for straightforward requests like definitions, quick how-tos, or brief comparisons. For more complex or nuanced topics, the expanded view aims to present a balanced summary while pointing toward original articles, studies, and authoritative pages where readers can learn more. The layout encourages follow-up questions and deeper exploration directly from the search interface.
