Gemini Live Adds Deep Research, Notebooks Join AI Mode

With back-to-school season in full swing, Google is rolling out a suite of study tools across the Gemini app and Search to help students study smarter and stay organized.

Gemini Live now includes Deep Research integration, allowing you to request research reports by voice and then discuss or refine the generated content in real time. This feature aims to speed up initial research and make it easier to iterate on findings without switching apps.

Google is offering special subscriptions for students: college students in the United States can get one year of Google AI Pro for free (regularly $19.99 per month). There is also a promotional bundle that pairs AI Pro with YouTube Premium at a significant discount. Internationally, eligible students can receive a year of AI Plus, priced at $4.99 per month. These offers are designed to make AI-powered study tools more accessible for learners worldwide.

A new “Student” hub in the Gemini side panel brings together offers and study-focused features, including flashcards, practice quizzes, and quick access to student discounts and resources.

The study notebooks introduced earlier this year are also getting upgrades. Currently, students can upload notes and class materials to generate lesson plans and practice quizzes automatically. In the coming weeks, Google will add support for graphs and images within notebooks and integrate with Google Calendar so you can schedule assignment due dates and exam reminders directly from your syllabus.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search are expanding to include interactive study tools and simulations designed to explain complex subjects. These features create visual, hands-on learning aids that help students grasp foundational concepts quickly and then explore deeper, customized scenarios.

  • You can search for a topic like “pH scale” and get an interactive visual in an AI Overview to understand core ideas. This functionality will be fully available in the coming weeks.
  • For more targeted learning, you can ask for specialized visualizations—such as plotting different citrus fruits on the pH scale—so AI Mode generates a tailored, interactive experience for your exact question.

Search already supports custom practice quizzes for a wide range of subjects and standardized tests, including the ACT, AP exams, GRE, LSAT, MCAT, SAT, and various international tests. These quizzes can be tailored to the topics you need to practice most, helping you focus revision time efficiently.

“Create a quiz with the most commonly tested vocab words to help me prep for the SAT.”

AI Mode now integrates with Gemini Notebooks, accessible in the side panel. Google suggests creating a notebook for each class or project and adding slides, syllabi, articles, and other reference materials. Notebooks let you consolidate resources, include previous AI Mode threads, and build a persistent knowledge base you can query and expand over time.

You can add past AI Mode threads related to a subject so your notebook brings everything together in one place, letting you ask questions and analyze topics based on your reference materials as you develop ideas over the semester.

A new capability will create ready-to-use study documents from your uploaded files or AI Mode threads. For example, you can combine a photo of handwritten notes with lecture slides and ask Search to produce a concise one-page summary of the key concepts.

For example, add a photo of your handwritten notes and lecture slides, then ask Search for a one-pager that outlines the essential ideas.

Google Lens is also adding an interactive learning experience that helps you work through difficult problems and confirms whether you’re on the right track. Simply snap a photo of the problem, and Lens will guide you through explanations and steps. This Lens feature will roll out globally in English in the coming weeks.
