Android Auto and CarPlay Add Navigation for Motorcycles

A new navigation option has launched for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, offering a navigation experience tailored specifically for motorcycle riders.

Both Android Auto and CarPlay are primarily designed for cars, but their usefulness extends to other vehicle types. Recognizing this, Google adjusted terminology and interface elements across the platform to better accommodate different kinds of vehicles. Motorcycles are a prime example of an alternate use case that benefits from an experience built around two-wheeled needs rather than standard car-centric navigation.

While motorcycles have had some level of compatibility with these platforms for several years, the experience hasn’t always felt optimized. To address that gap, third-party navigation provider Sygic has introduced a motorbike-focused mode on Android Auto and CarPlay. The new offering is intended to present the most relevant information to riders and to improve safety and situational awareness while on the road.

The update, released as version 26.4 of Sygic, brings a navigation alternative for riders who use Android Auto or CarPlay-enabled motorcycle dashboards. Instead of relying solely on car-oriented apps, motorcyclists can now use an interface that surfaces rider-specific details such as weather along the route, elevation changes, and scenic or twisty-road routing options. These features are designed to help users plan trips that match their preferences, whether they prioritize efficiency, fuel stops, or an enjoyable scenic ride.

Sygic highlights several rider-focused enhancements included in the motorbike mode. One prominent change is a set of pulsing visual alerts designed to draw immediate attention to important route events, including accidents, hazards, and sudden weather changes. The visual cues aim to be easily noticed at a glance, helping riders react faster without distracting from the road.

Additional rider-specific information includes:

  • Elevation data and terrain profile to anticipate climbs and descents
  • A weather forecast timed for arrival at the destination
  • Fuel station awareness to reduce range anxiety during longer rides
  • Motorcycle-friendly routing options that prioritize twisty roads and scenic paths

These elements combine to make navigation more relevant and practical for riders. Elevation profiles and terrain information help plan for sections that require more physical input or careful throttle control, while destination-timed weather forecasts allow riders to make informed decisions about gear and stops. Fuel station awareness is particularly important for motorcycles with smaller tanks or for rides through remote areas. And by offering routing preferences that favor twisty or scenic roads, the app caters to riders who prioritize the enjoyment of the ride itself.

Beyond the core navigation features, the visual design for motorcycle dashboards is adjusted for quick readability and reduced distraction. Riders typically need concise, high-contrast visuals that can be interpreted rapidly with minimal eye movement. Sygic’s motorbike mode appears aimed at meeting those needs by presenting critical route events and navigation prompts in an unobtrusive yet obvious manner.
