Enable Continued Conversation for Gemini in Home Assistant

Gemini for Home’s voice assistant is gaining a Continued Conversation feature, removing the need to switch to Gemini Live for longer, more natural exchanges on smart speakers and displays.

Continued Conversation works similarly to Google Assistant’s implementation: after the assistant answers, the device’s microphone stays active for a few seconds. Visual indicators such as pulsing or glowing lights on the speaker or display show that Gemini is still listening, allowing you to ask a follow-up question without repeating the wake phrase.

By keeping the microphone open briefly and preserving conversational context, Gemini for Home lets you continue an interaction more naturally. You can maintain a back-and-forth flow without constant interruptions from the hotword, which makes routine tasks and multi-step requests quicker and less clumsy.

For example:

  • You: “Hey Google, what’s the weather like in Tokyo?”
  • Gemini: “It’s currently 65 degrees and sunny in Tokyo.”
  • You: “How about tomorrow?”
  • Gemini: “Tomorrow will be a bit cooler with a high of 60 degrees and a chance of rain.”

In that exchange, Gemini retains the context that you are asking about Tokyo, so the follow-up question is interpreted correctly without repeating the location. That contextual awareness is central to Continued Conversation and makes interactions significantly more intuitive.

The feature is especially helpful for more complex tasks that require several quick follow-ups, such as building to-do lists, planning meals, or refining a recipe. You can ask for a recipe and immediately request an alternative, or tell Gemini to add ingredients to a shopping list right after it finishes speaking.

Try asking for a recipe, then follow up with “Give me a different version” or “Add those ingredients to my shopping list” as soon as the assistant finishes speaking.

Continued Conversation is not limited to US English anymore. Google is making it available across all Gemini-supported languages and regions, expanding the benefit of more natural interactions to users worldwide.

To keep accidental activations low, the update also adds improved “side-talk” detection. This lets Gemini better distinguish between an intended follow-up question and a side conversation happening nearby, so the assistant is less likely to remain active when someone else in the room speaks.

Another important update is that Continued Conversation now works for everyone in the household, including guests. That means multiple people can take advantage of the feature without individual account configuration during casual use.

Google has begun rolling out Continued Conversation for Gemini for Home. To turn it on, open your Home app, go to Home Settings > Gemini for Home voice assistant > Continued Conversation. Enabling this setting will allow the assistant to keep listening briefly after it responds, enabling smoother, context-aware follow-ups.
